An afternoon at St Andrew’s

October 21, 2008

Hearing the level of fury at the Age Action meeting today, particularly in the context of it being in a church, goes far beyond the surreal.

While I can appreciate why John Moloney was booed off the stage, I still think he should have been allowed to speak, if only on the grounds that everyone should be allowed to speak.

But listening to clips of what went on, on DriveTime tonight, it’s hard to worry about John Moloney or any other member of the government. It’s hard to think about anything other than how things got to this point.

That it took a church full of over 70s getting quite that angry says so very much about the country we live in.

If I’m honest I suppose I’m embarassed by it. I’m embarassed to live in a country where people who should be looked after, people who have done their bit, feel that they have been reduced to acting that way on their own behalf.

Have we no decency?
