Celebrating my 23rd crosaire by learning to count.
So my crossword stats, thanks purely to Barry, now look much more impressive – an achievement somewhat negated by apparent total lack of numeracy.

Touch of perspective, please
A lot of people died yesterday.
The vast majority of whom never got a chance to hear or see Thriller or Off The Wall.
The vast majority of whom didn’t get to die surrounded by friends and family in a top-end medical facility.
The vast majority of whom are not being talked about, or reported on, or thought about today.
So while it’s all well and good to reflect on any one person’s life, career and influence… just the tiniest piece of perspective today wouldn’t go astray.

Comedy letter of the day
I’ve read this letter three times, and still can’t find a way to take it seriously*.
I mean, really, imagine the utter shock and disgust that would reverberate around the nation, if not the world, shaking our society to its very core, if there was evidence that men got paid more to do the same work women do.
*Not to mention, they’ve only been doing that equal pay for Wimbledon malarky since 2007. Welcome to the 21st Century.

Women in Politics
Yet again the question of quotas for female politicians raises it’s (extra pretty?) head.
Mary O’Rourke is on 4FM arguing that they are unnecessary and that the right people will get elected without them.
If women make up only 13% of the Dáil, does that mean she’s saying men are 7.5 times better at politics? Better politicians? Better candidates?
If you’ll excuse my potentially dodgy maths, surely that is the logical conclusion of what she’s saying?
Is Ireland entirely devoid of women capable of running the country?
[Sub-question: Is Ireland equally devoid of men capable of that task??]

A thought
I just heard one of those lovely ads for drinking. Or pubs. Or whatever.
And it occurred to me, in light of a conversation I had earlier on today, that at some point this country will have to deal with our collective alcohol problem. Before we die.
On that note, I’m reminded of certain lobby groups arguing against drink driving laws and general societal restrictions on boozing on the grounds that jobs in bars and restaurants would be lost.
Imagine, if you will, a lobby group, supported by government, arguing that we couldn’t let people be vaccinated against a deadly disease (we’ll call it cervical cancer, for argument’s sake) on the grounds that less illness would mean doctors would be out of a job…
